Shift in approach
Through the course of our research and group discussions, we made a strategic decision to pivot away from centering our project on point-of-sale (POS) systems. Our findings revealed that the current POS ecosystem is already well-established and diverse, offering a range of solutions that adequately serve the needs of various stakeholders within ephemeral marketplaces. As such, we concluded that further innovation in this area would offer limited impact. Instead, we chose to shift our focus toward enhancing the interpersonal dynamics that define these markets. Our attention turned to the question: how can we extend the reach of ephemeral markets into communities and areas that traditionally lack access to them? In particular, we explored strategies for repurposing unsold inventory from standard market hours, thereby not only reducing waste but also fostering continued engagement between vendors and consumers beyond the limited timeframe of conventional market operations.
Our Story
It started with a simple question at the end of a farmers market: What happens to all the unsold goods? Watching vendors pack up fresh produce and handmade items—often with nowhere else to go—sparked an idea: what if the market didn’t end when the stalls came down?
