woodworking
3-4 weeks
legs
hand-cut legs, joined with dominoes.
backrest
testing piece for rattan incision (CNC):
pro: It worked. con: Incision was slightly small for complete press (5.5mm); should have opted for at least 6mm.
backrest/ armrest
bracket lacked some angle tilt after assembling, causing the backrest to be a bit too upright, but it still turned out good.
rattan
did not account for the slanted angle of the overlaying frames, making it hard to staple and cut the entire piece. Rattan was not wide enough for the entire wrap. Had to use chipboard to create a test template. (Almost did not work)
spline
tried to use strings and binder clips to secure while glue dried (failed). Not perfect, ended up using a lot of wood filler. (Almost did not work)
fastening
continuous trial and error and error and error: Originally did NOT account for thicker wood for legs so only got 2 inch screws Wood is too hard (broke TOO MANY screws, keeps stripping: some broke inside the chair while drilling) If I knew there was an extra week,,, definitely would have chosen dominos :(
Back legs were slightly wider than front legs, necessitating the creation of two wedges.
seat
did not account for indented cut= domino joints ended up showing (part of my design now!)
Attaching seat: 5/16 dowel hole joints+ wood glue
finishing
two layers
frame (did not use)
did not work. Frame was not completely 90 degrees after using dominoes. Became too small for the chair after sanding. Therefore, chose to not use it and instead used two rectangular rods as support.
